Mexico, Central America

Alternative Name
Honduras Walnut, Black Poison Wood

Chechen has an attractive grain pattern – the heartwood is very dark brown with green and orange stripes, very dense and takes a good polish.

Common Uses
Turning, furniture, musical instruments

Interesting Facts
It was quickly realized that the Chechen’s sap is toxic. When sitting under the tree, sap that dripped on skin would cause a rash similar to that of poison ivy. Fortunately for woodworkers, the wood itself is not toxic.
